A Slower Pace of Life and Nature’s Beauty
One of the biggest motivations for our move was the desire to escape the fast-paced, high-pressure lifestyle we were living in the UK. The beautiful Charente promised something different: a place where time seemed to move with the rhythm of the seasons. Life here revolves around nature – walnut and grape harvests in autumn, vibrant sunflowers and rolling vineyards in summer, and cosy evenings by the fire with Raclette or Tartiflette and a glass of locally made red wine in winter.
The natural beauty here is captivating. We wake up to stunning sunrises and end our days under expansive, star-filled skies. The Charente offers countless opportunities to reconnect with nature. Whether it’s walking through ancient forests, cycling along peaceful country lanes, or relaxing by the Charente River, there’s always a sense of serenity in the air.
Affordability and Value for Money
Compared to many other regions in France – or even back in the UK -the Charente area offers excellent value for money. We were able to purchase a beautiful property with space for our family and enough room to create our business, La Grue Gites.
For house hunters, the region has a range of properties to suit different budgets. Whether you’re dreaming of a quaint stone cottage or a sprawling estate, the Charente has options that are far more affordable than similar properties near major cities.
However, it’s important to stay realistic. With large properties and acres of land often come significant upkeep responsibilities. We learned quickly that regular maintenance, particularly during the summer months, can be a full-time job. Grass-cutting from March to late June, for example, became a regular part of our routine. But with a bit of preparation, it’s manageable and rewarding.
A Strong Sense of Community
Moving to another country can feel isolating at first, but the Charente has a wonderful sense of community. In rural France, families often have deep-rooted connections, and building friendships takes time, but it’s worth the effort. By getting involved in local events and supporting nearby businesses, we have gradually become a part of our local community.
One of the biggest surprises for us was the warmth and hospitality of the local people. Our children’s integration into their school was made so much easier by the nurturing environment provided by teachers and classmates. The emphasis on play, creativity, and well-rounded development gave them the space to thrive in ways that were different from the UK system.
Today, we count many of our neighbours and guests as friends. Some of our gîte guests have even gone on to buy properties in the area after experiencing the local way of life. There’s something incredibly rewarding about being part of a network that supports one another – from lending a hand during harvests to sharing a glass of Pineau des Charentes at the local market.
The Local Culture and Culinary Delights
It’s impossible to talk about the Charente without mentioning the food and wine! The region is home to a rich gastronomic tradition. We’ve come to love fresh produce from the markets, local goats cheeses, and, of course, the famous Cognac and Pineau des Charentes. Seasonal eating is part of life here, with menus changing to reflect what’s available locally. We’ve learned to slow down and truly enjoy mealtimes with family and friends, often extending late into the evening.
For anyone considering a move to this area, I recommend immersing yourself in the culinary traditions. Take a tour of a local vineyard, visit the weekly market and try your hand at making regional dishes such as Torteau Fromager Manslois. It’s a wonderful way to feel more connected to the area and to its people.
The Challenges and Rewards of Moving
Of course, moving to France wasn’t without its hurdles. French bureaucracy is infamous and we spent many long days navigating paperwork, from residency permits to business registrations. Learning the language was another challenge. Although I had studied French at University, communicating fluently took time and effort. I made it a point to listen to French radio, watch TV, and practice conversations every day. Over time, it started to click.
Despite the challenges, the rewards have far outweighed the difficulties. We’ve gained a greater appreciation for life’s simple pleasures – watching our children grow up bilingual is a real gift, growing and harvesting our own vegetables, and spending evenings with friends in the garden. Life here feels richer, more connected, and more fulfilling.
