There are so many local things to do whilst staying at La Grue Gites and we would appreciate your feedback about where you have visited so we can add your experience to our blog and your photos to our gallery.

Mons has lots going on  – with our very own Cognac and Pineau producers, Laval-Aubinaud. You can buy direct from the property after a tasting session. Kathy and her Mum speak English very well too.

There’s a Snail Farm, La Cagouille Charentaise. Snails are a delicacy here and are made into pate and sausages. Tours are available.

Established since 2020, the Matard family has an Organic, seasonal, fruit and vegetable producer just down the road in Juif – an easy walk for your fruit ‘n’ veg.

Rouillac which is a fifteen minute drive away, boasts one of the largest markets in South-West France and offers a real treat for ‘foodies’. 

 Rouillac also boasts a fine epicerie which offers a warm welcome and a great cafe ‘gourmand’ at Mado & Mado and an extensive wine cellar.

There are also plenty of sites of historical interest close by where you can explore Roman ruins and beautiful architecture. Rouillac has Les Bouchauds, a Roman amphitheatre.

The infamous, historic town of Cognac is only forty minutes away with its distillery tours and river trips along the Charente. There you can find Remy Martin, Hennessy, Camus, Mercow and Baron Otard to name but a few. Cherente Cognac Houses.

For fishing, we have Les Gours 15 mins from La Grue, Luxe and Thors nearby. Pop in to the local fishing shop in Aigre for advice. English speaking. 

Verteuil-sur-Charente, thirty minutes away, has a beautiful Chateau and is a lovely day out. 

In eighty minutes you can be on the beautiful Atlantic beaches of Royan, Meschers and Chatelaillon Plage. Read more about the beaches in the region.
