One of the things I love most about living in the Charente is how much of daily life still revolves around simple, human connections.
When guests arrive at La Grue Gites, many are expecting beautiful countryside and slower days — and they do get that. But what often surprises them most is how quickly they start to feel part of local life once they step into everyday routines.
Markets, local producers, small shops, and brocantes aren’t just pleasant extras here. They’re part of how people live.
Market Day: The Heart of the Week
I always encourage guests to visit Thursday market day in Aigre.
It’s not just about shopping — it’s about atmosphere. Stalls fill the square, neighbours stop to chat, and there’s a sense of rhythm that’s hard to describe until you experience it.
Guests often tell me that market day is the moment they start thinking:
“This feels like something we could do every week.”
You buy what’s in season, what looks good, and what you’ll enjoy cooking — rather than filling a trolley just because it’s convenient.
Getting to Know the People Behind the Food
Living like a local here means knowing where your food comes from — and often, who produces it.
Some of my favourite people to introduce guests to include:
- Philippe Guedon, an organic farmer in Gourville, just ten minutes away. He produces organic pasta and flours and also acts as a collection point for weekly online organic orders from a group of local producers.
- Valérie and her daughter Marina Raffier, local cheesemakers with a farm shop open every morning. Guests love visiting them and often end up planning their meals around what’s available.
- Mr Vilneau, only five minutes away, producing award-winning IGP Charentais wines. It’s always a favourite visit for wine lovers.
These aren’t tourist attractions — they’re part of everyday life here.
The Joy of Being Recognised
One small moment that always makes me smile is when guests realise they’ve been remembered.
The baker who greets them by name.
The stallholder who asks how they enjoyed last week’s cheese.
The café owner who knows what they’ll order.
These little interactions help people feel settled and welcomed — especially when they’re considering a big move to a new country.
Brocantes, Antiques and French Treasure Hunting
Another joy of living in the Charente is the abundance of brocantes and second-hand shops.
Guests who are house hunting often love exploring these places, not just for bargains but for inspiration. French furniture is solid, well-made, and full of character.
I often suggest:
- A local dealer in Aigre
- Another excellent one here in Mons
- Two wonderful recycling shops where you can find real treasures
Many guests start imagining how they’d furnish their future French home long before they’ve even found it.
Why This Matters When You’re Considering Relocating
Experiencing local life isn’t just charming — it’s practical.
Shopping locally teaches you:
- How villages function
- How far you really need to travel
- What daily routines might look like
- Whether this lifestyle suits you long-term
It’s very different from staying somewhere briefly and eating out every day.
Slowing Down Without Feeling Stuck
Living like a local doesn’t mean giving things up — it means choosing them more thoughtfully.
Guests often tell me they:
- Eat better
- Waste less
- Shop more intentionally
- Feel calmer
It’s not about perfection or trying to “be French”. It’s simply about finding a pace that feels manageable and human.
Why I Encourage Guests to Try This Way of Life
Whether guests are here for a holiday or considering relocating, I always encourage them to:
- Shop at the market
- Visit local producers
- Explore brocantes
- Take their time
These experiences often give people clarity — either confirming that they’d love to live here, or helping them realise they prefer to visit rather than relocate.
Both outcomes are equally valuable.
Would You Like to Experience This for Yourself?
