A Guide to Exploring Local Treasures

Just one of the great things to do whilst staying at La Grue is to go on your own bargain hunt! Brocantes, Puces and Antique dealers could be tucked away in a charming corner of the Charente countryside or in the centre of town market but one thing’s for sure, there’s hidden treasure to be found. We have had guests depart with antique French chairs strapped to their roof racks and Cognac bottle racks in the boot!

Here’s our guide to exploring these local treasure troves.

Brocantes

  • Alain SAUZET, 50 rue des Ponts, Aigre. I love a browse in here. Always an interesting exterieur display and you can’t miss it with the Union Jack flag outside.
  • MONS – Virtually opposite the church on the main road at 146 Grande Rue, Mons 16140. Step inside Mr Demellier’s barns and see what you can find. He has everything from exquisite mirrors to a French charette.
  • Nick Post in Verteuil, 10 rue du Temple – we have bought plenty of antique rugs from Nick. Nice chap, reasonable prices and some beautiful pieces.
  • Brocante in Nanteuil next to Lolly’s Tea Rooms.
  • 454 Rue des Merisiers, 16430 Champniers, this charming brocante  called Les Puces, offers a variety of vintage items and collectibles. A must-visit for treasure hunters.

Antiques Dealers

  • Antiquités Rivière – Found at 3 Rue des Antiquaires, 16100 Cognac, this dealer specializes in high-quality antique furniture and art pieces.
  • Antiquités de la Roche – Located at 7 Rue de la Grotte, 16400 La Couronne, offering a fine selection of antique clocks, jewellery, and decorative arts.

Second-Hand Shops

  • Uriel in Aigre (past the Chemist, florists and towards Gautier)
  • Avril in Rouillac is always good for a rummage – especially in the warehouse at the back.
  • Emmaüs Angoulême – Situated at 20 Rue du Gond, 16000 Angoulême, this well-known second-hand shop supports social causes and offers a wide range of pre-loved items from clothing to furniture. There is also an EMMAUS in Ruffec.

We recommend you check opening hours before travelling. Most places are closed on a Monday and during lunch times, possibly a Wednesday afternoon and a Friday afternoon.

Explore these charming spots and uncover hidden gems as you delve into the local culture and history through their unique offerings.
